A bus transporting choir members crashes into the Kenya River

A bus carrying 23 people to a wedding crashed into a flooded river in Kenya, killing at least 23 people.

The bus was swept away after the driver wanted to cross fast-flowing water over a bridge in the Enziu River, about 200 kilometers (125 miles) east of Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.

The church choir had hired the bus.

According to local media, four of the dead were children, and at least 12 people have been rescued.

However, the number of passengers on the bus at the time is unknown.

The driver was unfamiliar with the route and the river bridge in Mwingi, Kitui county, according to local news site the Standard.

The “terrible” accident happened on Saturday morning, according to Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu.

She went on to say that while 23 bodies had been recovered, more were still trapped inside the bus and that recovery efforts would resume on Sunday.

Several more parts of Kenya have recently received heavy rains, including drought-stricken areas in which domestic and wild animals have died due to a lack of pasture.
