Aubameyang has tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of AFCON 2021

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Gabon’s captain, tested positive for Covid-19 just four days before his country’s Africa Cup of Nations opener.

Aubameyang and Nice midfielder Mario Lemina both passed lateral flow tests upon their arrival at Cameroon’s Yaounde airport.

Anicet Yala, the coach, also tested positive.

According to head coach Patrice Neveu, the trio is isolating themselves in their hotel rooms and awaiting the results of PCR tests.

Gabon’s Group C campaign begins on Monday with a match against Comoros and concludes on Friday, 14 January, with a match against Ghana.

Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, 32, was dropped and stripped of the club’s captaincy last month due to disciplinary reasons.

On Sunday, hosts Cameroon will face Burkina Faso in the opening match of the Nations Cup (16:00 GMT).
