According to a human rights group, at least 20 remains have been recovered from a river in western Kenya in recent weeks.
According to Haki Africa, the majority of the bodies rescued from the Yala River, which drains into Lake Victoria, were discovered in bags, some bound and others maimed.
Hussein Khalid, Executive Director of Haki Africa, claimed that the local mortuary had received the unidentified dead and buried nine of them in a mass grave to make room for further bodies.
Locals claim that mysterious individuals dump the dead into the river at night.
Mr Khalid and another activist, Boniface Mwangi, reported seeing two bodies floating in the river.
Mr Mwangi shared footage from the area where they were discovered on Twitter:
River Yala is beautiful. The river water is a life-giver to hundreds of thousands of people in Western Kenya. Beneath the beauty is a dark secret, dumped bodies. Apart from River Yala, where else in Kenya forests and rivers are bodies dumped? @HakiAfrica @IPOA_KE #RiverYalaBodies pic.twitter.com/9WWUPEA66p— The People’s Watchman (@bonifacemwangi) January 18, 2022
