Seven people died and dozens more were hospitalized after consuming poisonous turtle meat in Tanzania’s semi-autonomous region of Zanzibar.
In a message shared on Twitter, Zanzibar President Hussein Mwinyi expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.
Following the incident, 24 other people were admitted to a hospital in Pemba.
Turtle meat is a popular delicacy among the people who live along the Indian Ocean’s coast.
It is believed that the one consumed was from a poisonous species.
Following the incident, Pemba Police Chief Juma Sadi banned the consumption of turtle meat.
